Renamed Ho Chi Minh City following the city's fall in 1975 but still known to all except city officials by the more evocative name Saigon, this is a dizzying, energetic metropolis where the spirit of Asia of the pasts lives on in the shadow of the ever increasing number of gleaming skyscrapers. Thus, you can browse teeming markets for silk and spices or pick up the latest brands in the air-conditioned shopping centres; eat tasty local delicacies from a street stall or splash out at a gourmet restaurant; take in the ancient pagodas and former GI hotels or simply relax in the modern comfort of a five star hotel. There is also a wealth of golf courses for those looking for a Vietnam golf holiday.
If you're a foodie, you're really spoilt for choice in Ho Chi Minh City, which boasts the country's largest selection of Vietnamese and international food; while the french-introduced baguette has become something of a local staple, there are plenty truly bizarre foodstuffs on offer - if you have a hankering for skinned snake, bat or porcupine you'll find plenty of restaurants happy to cater for you. Further, it's paradise if you're a fan of coffee, as with Vietnam being the world's 2nd biggest exporter they take it very seriously. If it's alcohol you're looking for, there is a vibrant nightlife and any number of places to drink until the early hours.
There are half a dozen golf clubs close to the city, all of them boasting at least 27 holes, so you'll be spoilt for choice on a golf holiday in Ho Chi Minh City. The nearest if the Vietnam Golf & Country Club, which has a reasonable claim to being the country's premier golfing facility thanks to 36 tough but enjoyable holes; in particular, the Lee Trevino-designed East Course, host of the Vietnam Masters in 2008, really gets the juices going. Equally, at the newly opened Twin Doves Golf Club, immaculate conditions and 5 star facilities make taking on the challenge offered by its well-protected multi-tiered greens a must, and if you really like a challenge then Don Nai Golf Resort is for you. Set around a massive lake and at times seemingly the inspiration for the film Waterworld, this is one of the most scenic and challenging courses in the country.
Local favourite Long Thanh Golf Club is a more generous affair, and unusually offers the novelty of a choice of greens at one hole, while the reasonable rates at the first class Song Be Golf Resort, with its 14 lakes and abundance of sand, mean that you need to play during the week to avoid very slow round. If you do want to play on the weekend and don't mind going a little off the beaten track, then the links-style course at Vung Tau Paradise Golf Resort is an enjoyable option.
Whichever of these tantalising options you go for on your golf holiday in Ho Chi Minh City, do remember to allow extra travelling time as the traffic can be fairly bad at certain parts of the day.
