The twin delights of Da Nang and Hoi An, together with a couple of top notch links-style golf courses (and more on the way) mean that Central Vietnam is earning a growing reputation as a great place to explore the attractions of the region, chill out on the beaches or simply get in a few round of golf.
Da Nang has a real buzz to it, and significant investment in its tree-lined boulevards and beachside resorts and the opening of a raft of top notch restaurants have only made it more attractive to holiday-makers. Many of Vietnam's most beautiful and isolated beaches and some of its friendliest people are found here, which makes up for the fact there isn't really that much in terms of tourist attractions beyond a vibrant drinking scene. But if you simply relax on the beach, eat and drink well and get in a few rounds of golf it's an ideal destination, especially with the cultural delights of the more charismatic Hoi An not far away.
A once sleepy riverside village turned tourist mecca, the old centre of Hoi An may now be dominated by hotels, restaurants, bars and souvenir shops but it retains its relaxed vibe, and with the Old Town closed to cars it offers welcome respite from the traffic chaos found elsewhere in Vietnam. Every full moon, the motorbikes are banned too for the 'Hoi An Legendary Night' which transforms the area into a magical land of silk lanterns, music, dancing and games. Certainly worth timing your visit to include this highlight. Not to suggest that there isn't plenty else to occupy and enchant you during your stay. A US$5 coupon can be purchased to offer entry to five attractions, from the Japanese Covered Bridge or Quan Cong Temple to a selection of museums, old houses and handicraft workshops. Go on bicycle tours, diving tours or learn to cook, or simply relax on the charming An Bang Beach or in the luxury of any of a number of top notch resorts.
Whichever of Da Nang or Hoi An you choose for your Vietnam golf holiday, both are close to the golfing options in the region. While at the time of writing (June 2012) we currently offer golf at just two courses here, that will soon change with the opening later in the year of the much hyped Laguna Lang Co Golf Club, designed by Nick Faldo. Until then, you'll have to stick to the highly rated courses designed by Colin Montgomerie and Greg Norman, which are both deserving of more than one round.
In Da Nang Golf Club, Norman has created a classic links-style course rated amongst the best in Asia. The fairways may be generous, but they are bumpy and bordered by lots of sand and needle pines, so finding a perfect lie is tough. Add in some stiff sea breezes and you have a recipe for an enjoyably challenging round demanding some creative shot making. With a second course due to open imminently, its reputation can only grow.
The Montgomerie Links Vietnam is a stunning course that brings a taste of the UK to Vietnam (thankfully not in a meteorological sense). An open links course of rippled fairways, stiff breezes and very thick rough, it's destined to become a mainstay on the Vietnamese golfing circuit and a must-play on your Vietnam golf holiday.
