This tough yet brilliant course somehow avoids being a novelty despite two par-6s and some unusual touches; a must play for those after the best.
As the name suggests, St. Andrew's 2000 was designed by Brit-born architect Desmond Muirhead to replicate a Scottish links course, and the result is one of the most interesting courses in Pattaya. Aimed at those with handicaps below 18, it presents quite a challenge, not least thanks to being the longest course in the region at 7777 yards. While the purists may not agree, it's a novelty to play the two par-6s which come in at over 800 yards apiece, and with all holes featuring elevated tees and greens as well as tight landing zones, this is a remarkable course with some touches of genius. From the 3-tiered tee box at 15, the highest point on the course, you hit towards an unusual split-level fairway, and the rocky outcrop in the middle of the 18th fairway can either give you an amazing bounce forward or send your ball back towards you.
This course will test your skills with every club in your bag, even those long irons that are rarely used on the more straightforward resort courses typical of the area, and navigating the numerous hazards requires some strategic, and accurate, shotmaking. Even if you don't leave with your scorecard intact, you will leave with some lasting memories and stories to make your friends at home jealous.
The sprawling clubhouse, featuring a range of restaurants and even karaoke and providing great views of the course, is well run by helpful staff who are happy to cater for large groups. Despite being on the expensive side, particularly taking into account the obligatory golf cart, St. Andrew's 2000 is often packed which can make for some slow rounds. Thankfully, the views on this sumptuous course are such that you won't mind too much if you are occasionally forced to wait to play a shot. Like the sound of this course?
