a reasonably priced challenge at this Pattaya favourite.
Located between two valleys which provide the elevation changes sadly lacking from the majority of golf courses in the Pattaya 'golf strip', the 27 holes at Khao Kheow Country Club are a challenge for even the most ardent golfer.
On the 18 holes of the main championship course (the extra nine has more of a resort feel), reaching the narrow fairways in blustery conditions whilst avoiding the plentiful bunkers and large ponds is tricky to manage consistently; even if you're succesful the large mounds mean that finding a flat lie is something to be cherished. Once you've made your way safely to the well maintained but smallish greens, the heavy undulations mean that getting down in two is no walk in the park. Thankfully the putting surface runs consistently all year round thanks to the management's special emphasis on green maintenance.
There are some memorable moments to be had, particularly on the signature par-3 17th which features the obligatory island green but with a stunning mountain backdrop. The 2nd is an epic par-5 where you hit from elevated tee to a snaking plateau fairway. If you can avoid the menacing bunker and the sloping edges, a second shot must avoid a mounded bunker that surrounds the landing zone to give yourself an opportunity to reach the sloping green. It's quite a journey.
An impressive clubhouse is slightly marred by locker facilities that are adequate at best, but once you are freshened up the panoramic views of the course available from the excellent restaurant more than make up for this. Friendly staff and generally experienced caddies add to the overall experience, and with reasonable green fees it all means that Khao Kheow Country Club is a great choice for your Thailand golf holiday.
