Just half an hour south of Pattaya on the site of a former coconut plantation lies the Eastern Star Golf Course, one of the very few creations of renowned designer Robert Trent Jones Jr to be found in Thailand. Overall though this isn't a particularly tough course, its openness allowing the higher handicappers to get away with the odd errant shot, but there is enough to keep the more experienced among us on our toes. The rather basic changing rooms are not indicative of the rest of the facilities which are excellent, with a good practice area and a welcoming restaurant known for its smoothies. For non-golfing members of you party there is an Olympic-size pool and some tennis courts, but it will be the golf course that will keep us coming back.
How to play Eastern Star Golf Course
Together with numerous dog-legs, tall trees and refreshing sea breeze it is a thinking man's course, where clever positioning will outscore the less subtle art of hitting it miles. Having said that, on the par-4 standout 9th you can't afford to be too short as it's a long route to the holes through an avenue of coconut trees, and if you play from the back tees the course does play quite long. The signature hole is the scenic par-3 13th with a tee shot over water to a green protected by another lake and an intimidatingly deep bunker on one side and some thick rough on the other.
