An enjoyably varied set of challenges with plenty to entertain non-playing members of your party too.
A member's only club that has now thankfully been opened up to all, Burapha Golf Club boasts 36 holes that wind their way through the hills, lakes and tropical vegetation of what is a beautiful setting for a golf course, just outside Pattaya. The wide fairways of the East Course (made up of the inappropriately named American Wood 9 and the British Links 9) offer the high handicapper an opportunity to score well from the elevated tees, so long as they can avoid the strategically located bunkers.
While the trees have some growing to do before the opening stretch can live up to the 'woodland' label and there is an unsurprising lack of sand dunes on the links nine, these 18 holes make up an enjoyable round with great views across the valleys. The second course provides even better views, especially on the Dunes nine where the climb up the 6th and 7th are well rewarded with a panorama comprising everything from the tower blocks of Pattaya to the islands of the coast. This nine is probably the star of the course which hosted the 2010 Thailand Open, its open, undulating style contrasting nicely with the parkland style of the Crystal nine that precedes it.
Whichever combination you choose you will find the course to be in excellent condition, especially the consistently fast (if small) greens that run reassuringly true. Sadly the same cannot be said of the locker rooms which are not really up to scratch, and we found the service to be generally disappointing which was particularly frustrating as there was a conspicuous lack of signs to help you find your way through the clubhouse. Nonetheless the Burapha Golf Club remains a good place to get in a round of golf; those holidaying with the family in tow might be particularly drawn here thanks to the wide variety of non-golfing activities such as tennis and swimming that can distract the kids for a few hours.
