a memorably scenic challenge in a remote location, with some of the finest holes in Thailand at a reasonable price.
In the remote hills and valleys between Kanchanaburi and Hua Hin lies the Dragon Hills Golf & Country Club, home to 18 of the finest holes in Asia thanks to American designer Jim Engh.
This course makes the most of the natural environment to provide a scenic challenge for golfers of all abilities. The undulating fairways and greens, forced carries over water, well placed sand traps and a smattering of dog-legs all combine to make for a truly enjoyable round of golf. Particularly memorable is the back nine, which is split evenly amongst par-3s, par-4s and par-5s and features the signature holes 10 through 12. At the noteworthy par-5 11th, after a drive that hopefully stops just short of the creek that cuts through the fairway, you can either take on the 230 yard carry over water and sand to the green or take an extra shot and go around these hazards; at the downhill 12th, an island green provides an enjoyably scenic challenge.
Each hole has a challenge all of its own on a back nine that never repeats the same trick twice, so make sure you score well on the slightly easier front nine. Whilst course conditions have been variable over the years, during our visit the fairways and greens were in excellent condition, and the scenery never disappoints. There is nothing fancy about the rustic clubhouse and accommodation, but then again a sleek modern design would seem out of place here. Reasonable green fees mean this is a popular choice, and the lack of marshals can lead to some frustratingly slow play during peak times, but if you can play at other times then Dragon Hills Golf & Country Club comes highly recommended.
