Gran Canaria enjoys the distinction of housing the oldest golf club in Spain. It was inaugurated on 17th December 1891 on a site known as 'Lomo del Polvo'. In 1956 it was transferred to the plains of Bandama, situated close to an extinct volcano with a diameter of 800m and a depth of 200 m. This is a testimony to the volcanic origins of Gran Canaria some 14 million years ago. The course has wonderful views of spectacular, deep ravines. Golfers enjoy spring-like weather all year round, allowing players to wear summer clothes.
Golf de las Palmas golf course
The course is no walkover, and the narrow fairways are certainly the biggest challenge. Add in soft fairways, which does not give much roll, and holes played into the wind, and finally the tricky dogleg holes that requires the player's full attention. Then you have all the challenges that make a round of golf fun and memorable. Designed by Mackenzie Ross, it is a par 71, 18-hole course, with 2 putting greens, one of which is floodlit, a practice tee, pitching green, instructors, pro-shop, club hire service, a restaurant and an excellent wine cellar. There are also two tennis courts, a horse-riding area and a swimming pool.
