If you're looking for something a little different for your golf holiday, you can't go wrong with Myanmar. Over a century ago Kipling wrote that it was "unlike any place you know about" and the same holds true today - it really is a world apart. Instead of the over commercialisation that has blighted other countries in the region, Myanmar is one of the few places still able to offer an authentically Asian experience, a glimpse of what it might have been like in Thailand before it became everyone's favourite holiday destination. Instead of brand new transportation links bought with tourist dollars, expect potholed roads full of creaky buses and outmoded motorcycles; instead of a McDonald's on every corner, you'll find stall selling a variety of tasty (and spicy) local foods.
Despite all the above, Myanmar has some surprisingly good hotels so it's still possible to live in the lap of luxury while exploring the sights, of which there are many. Ride a Wild West stagecoach past grand British Mansions en route to the plains of Bagan where you'll find 4000 (!) sacred stupas scattered across the landscape. Take on old river steamer down the Ayeyarwady, catch some rays on the beautifully unspoiled Ngapali Beach, or hike through the verdant forests of Kalaw. In the Mahamuni Paya houses of Mandalay, you can see a buddha that is re-covered in gold leaf every single day. With such a wide variety of options available to those willing to explore, holiday to Myanmar need not be just about golf.
That's not to say that there aren't some quality courses out there for golfers looking to avoid the crowded courses in, say, Thailand. The legacy of British rule lives on in the form of a number of excellent and historic courses, and the gradual increase in tourism has led to investment in a number of newer facilities. Master the tricky greens and avoid the numerous water hazards at Yangon Golf Club, which has just celebrated its centenary, or take on the challenges set by Gary Player at the prestigious Pun Hlang Golf Club. There are plenty of places to play on what will no doubt be an unforgettable golf holiday.
