A stunning course where the elegant and endless bunkering make this a challenge not to be taken lightly. Do not forget your sand wedge!
In the shadow of Mount Pulai lie the two championship golf courses of the Pulai Springs Country Club, once deemed worthy of a spot on the World's Top 50 Golf Resorts and still regarded as amongst the best in Asia.
The main course here, the Pulai Course from world-renowned designed Robert Trent Jones Jr, is a match for any in Malaysia and a challenge for even highly accomplished golfers. Like its sister course, the Melana, this is an undulating affair played through tree-lined terrain; where it differs is in the ubiquity of bunkers, stylishly and cleverly located everywhere you don't want them to be. Veer slightly off line from the tee or fall short on your approach and the chances are you'll be reaching for the sand wedge. At least from the elevated tees you get a good idea of what you face, although the green complexes often contain a surprise all two such is the ferocity of the protection offered by deep bunkers.
There are some unconventional facets to a round here: 3rd and the 6th share a green (we're still not sure what happens if you end up in the wrong hole) and the 7th fairway is split, offering two l routes to a green that is typically small and sloping. The back nine's challenges stem as much from water as from sand - on fully five holes you have to take care to keep your ball out of the drink. On the par-3 13th, you memorably hit from island tee to island green; the last 80 yards of the short par-4 16th are so full of bunkers that avoiding a tricky bunker shot is an achievement in itself, and at the 18th you must avoid the water all the way along the left side of the dog-legging fairway before picking your way through the numerous bunkers to allow yourself two shots for what would be a hard-earned par.
The clubhouse is designed to resemble an ancient Malay Palace, and its exposed timber and stone murals do a good job of that. The changing rooms are excellent, and you can even enjoy jacuzzis, saunas or steam rooms before retiring to the golfer's terrace for a drink. If you've managed to play to your handicap on the Pulai Course at Pulai Springs Country Club, you will most certainly have earned it.
