A vibrant city known as the place you'll find the soul of Malaysia, the small city-state of Malacca is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the country thanks to its fascinating part in the birth of modern-day Malaysiaand its heritage architecture. Aside from perusing the various museums and exploring the various temples, there are various ways to explore this city, many of them unconventional. If traveling round on a London double decker bus is a bit close to home, you can take a joyride on the Duck Tour whose amphibious vehicle knows no restrictions, or go on the Taming Sari Revolving Tower for a spectacular view of the city from 110 metres up.
The inevitable creep of commercialism ensures that there are plenty of shopping centres selling much the same goods you can find on the high street back at home, so you're better off browsing the night markets, especially the one at Jonkers Walk where you can get anything from cheap chinese gadgets to grapes dipped in chocolate. That won't be the only culinary experience on offer, as local Peranakan food competes with Portuguese-Eurasian classics for the affection of your taste buds. The 'devil curries' are particularly popular, but consider yourself warned. If you survive that, there's just about enough nightlife to make you think twice about getting an early night. While it's not exactly on a par with Soho, you can easily find a quiet bar or noisy club to while away the early hours.
Just beyond the city there are the beaches at Pulau Besar and Tanjung Bidara, as well as the wildlife and theme-parks of Ayer Keroh, but the main attraction here is the golf on offer, and the five courses all within half an hour's drive of the city centre make Melaka an excellent choice for a Malaysia golf holiday. None of them are particularly straightforward apart from the fairly workmanlike Gemas Golf Resort that you should only play once you've had your fill of the others. Finding a flat lie at the challenging Orna Golf & Country Club is tough, and some of the largest bunkers you will ever encounter ensure that its reputation as one of the toughest courses in the land is deserved.
The immaculately maintained 27 holes of Tiara Melaka Golf & Country Club and the less prestigious yet still enjoyable Ayer Keroh Country Clubare definitely courses for the long-hitters; the latter boasts one of the longest holes in Asia at 658 yards, although reasonable green fees as well as the monkeys and macaques you'll encounter mean that there is plenty to tempt the rest of us. Finally, an enjoyable round is in store at A'Famosa Golf & Country Club, where to score well you'll have to avoid deep rough, water, pot bunkers and crocodiles (don't worry, they're kept securely in an enclosure by the island green of the 7th hole).
When you add reasonable green fees and abundant tee times to the fact that those willing to drive a bit further can find a number of additional courses nearer Kuala Lumpur and Johor, you'll have even more reason to consider Malacca an ideal destination for those looking to combine a golf holiday in Malaysia with a little bit of culture.

Not known for its historical attractions or natural wonders, Johor is mainly home to rubber and oil palm plantations. However, the last decade has seen an explosion in golf courses that cater mainly for Singaporeans driving across the border in search of the value for money golf that is so hard to find in their own country. This range of choice and reasonable green fees mean Johor is a good choice for golf holidays in Malaysia. Johor Bahru is the state capital and its seedy border-town feel means that it inevitably suffers by comparison to its southern neighbour, acting more as a transit point than somewhere to linger.
To take advantage of the excellent golf on offer, we'd recommend staying either in Singapore or Malacca, each of which are around an hour long drive from most of the Johor golf courses. One further option, for those unwilling to travel, would be to stay at a golf resort, and both the Palm Resort Golf & Country Club and Tanjong Puteri Golf Resort offer 54 holes of varied golf as well as top notch accommodation and easy access to many of the area's other courses.
There is plenty to challenge golfers of all abilities in Johor. One of the big draws is the Jack Nicklaus course at the Legend's Golf Resort, rated amongst the very best in Asia. A risk/reward affair with bags of character and some daunting carries, it more than lives up to it's reputation. Elsewhere, there are plenty of unforgettable experiences to be had: the sloping island green 17th at Horizon Hills Golf & Country Club will live long in the memory, particularly if you can avoid dropping a shot or three, and at Desaru Golf & Country Club, you'll not only have to contend with sea breezes and the dense jungle vegetation that lies just off-line, but also the light-fingered monkeys that live there and already own quite a collection of unattended mobile phones.
If you're looking for something a little more easy-going, both Starhill Golf & Country Club and Ponderosa Golf & Country Club offer the chance for the hackers amongst us to assume a veneer of respectability whilst providing a 5-star clubhouse experience and plenty of alternative activities to keep the rest of the family entertained whilst you are out pretending to be Tiger Woods.
So despite Johor lacking the cultural experiences and spectacular sights to enchant the casual tourist, it more than makes up for it with the breathtaking range of golf on offer - and if you're in the market for golf holidays in Malaysia, that should really be all that matters.
