An archipelago of 99 islands, where only one (Pulau Langkawi) has any real settlement, this is the place tourists usually come when they are seeking a beach holiday in a tropical paradise. While its pristine white beaches and swaying coconut palms mean that it offers this kind of perfect relaxation in spades, there is much more to Langkawi than simply lying on the beach enjoying a cocktail made with the cheap duty-free alcohol that has, in recent years, attracted yet more visitors. While it's certainly tempting to make full use of the private beaches offered by many of the resort hotels, the attractive jungle-clad hills and the patchwork of paddy-fields in the interior of the island offer excellent trekking opportunities. A leisurely dip in the seven pools at the top of Telaga Tujuh Waterfalls, or elephant rides and snake charmers on offer at Oriental Village are also worth rousing yourself from the sun-bed for, and that's before we get to the golf courses that make Langkawi a great option for golf holidays in Malaysia.
The recently constructed marina at Telaga Harbour Park is the perfect jump off point for a variety of boat tours available for those wishing to explore the nearby islands, engage in a variety of water sports or go diving in the crystal clear waters, and Underwater World offers the chance to experience life under the sea without getting wet.
Fortunately for those of us with an odd compulsion to spoil a perfectly good walk by trying to hit small white balls into tiny little holes, the island boasts three courses. While Gunung Raya Golf Resort won't win any awards, it's a decent course and a useful addition to the limited golfing options on Langkawi, and offers the chance to get your swing going before taking on the delights of the other two courses. The recently opened 99 East Golf Club lies on the oceanfront and veers between tight, undulating holes lined with thick forests and open links-style holes. It's an enjoyably varied challenge which is deserving of its championship status and in ordinary circumstances would be viewed as the jewel in the island's golfing crown.
However, that particular accolade belongs to the simply stunning Datai Bay Golf Club, which will likely blow you away. It's been voted most scenic AND best course in Malaysia, and it's not hard to see why. The green fees may be higher than the average for Malaysia, but it will be money well spent. Immaculate narrow fairways wind up and down between thick rain forest and over meandering streams adding up to a challenge that is as tough as it is scenic. Each hole feels like an adventure in itself, a feeling enhanced by the resident monkeys and giant lizards you are likely to encounter along the way. After 18 holes you'll be desperate for more, and fortunately the course boasts a 19th - a par-3 requiring a carry over the clear waters of the Andaman Sea to a small green backed with imposing mountains. One of the most intoxicating tee shots you will ever take. This course really is up there with the best of the best, and alone is reason enough to decide on Langkawi as the destination for golf holidays in Malaysia.
