You really get what you pay for at this prestigious and immaculately presented championship course
Built on the site of what was once the largest open cast tin mine on earth (hence the name) and acting as a centrepiece to a resort complex that spans some 1,000 aces, the golf course at Mines Resort & Golf Club is a quality affair. It's the recipient of numerous prestigious awards, including being voted in the top ten courses in Asia, and has played host to a number of professional events including the Kuala Lumpur Open and the 1999 World Cup of Golf that was won by Tiger Woods.
The front nine cuts through thick jungle, with the natural elevation changes complementing the man made sand traps to produce a stern test. From the stunning par-3 2nd, where your tee shot must traverse a deep jungle-filled ravine, to the enjoyable tee shot from the massively elevated 9th tee, there are challenges aplenty. On the 7th, the green is ensconced in a small u-shaped dell and surrounded by bushes. Get your approach wrong and you are in a whole heap of trouble.
The back nine is played on more open terrain next to a large lake which adds to the aesthetics of an already beautiful course. It's a lot flatter than the front nine but the lake is used to good effect in keeping you on your toes. The par-5 17th is a monster hole, and you'll do very well to make par; however, this achievement is set in context somewhat by the green-side plaque marking Tiger Woods' eagle 3 here in 1999.
The Bermuda fairways are in immaculate condition, with a pleasant carpet-like feel not lessened by rain thanks to a good drainage system, and the greens, likewise, are pretty much perfect. Despite being relatively flat, there are plenty of subtle breaks to keep you guessing and the speed is lightning quick.
The service is excellent - everything you'd expect from a course of this calibre. The superb reading skills of the experienced caddies saved us many many shots over the round. Likewise, the facilities are first class, with the sumptuous locker rooms really making an impression. Really, overall it's a top notch golf course that more than justifies the high green fees. If you get the chance, don't miss the opportunity to play a round at the Mines Resort & Golf.
