A beautiful course in such immaculate condition that you won't be too upset with the high scores you'll shoot.
In the midst of a natural sanctuary of virgin forest just north of Kuala Lumpur lies Templer Park Golf and Country Club, designed by Japanese ex-pro Jumbo Ozaki. It's a classy affair. From the moment you get out of the car, there are eager and friendly staff waiting to assist you; check in is quick and painless, the buggy waiting area ordered, and the locker rooms clean and luxurious. Out on the course, things are no different, with the Bermuda fairways and greens in immaculate condition and the breathtaking sight of the massive limestone rock known as Bukit Takun in the background.
Playing golf Templer Park Golf and Country Club
Templer Park is a beautiful course, with every hole having a character of its own. The variety is illustrated in the comparison between the par-4 3rd that plays flat as a pancake and the imposing par-5 15th, which takes a huge dive down from tee to green. The awkward par-3 8th requires a tough carry over water, and the magnificant par-4 12th requires a risky drive over the jungle to a narrow strip of fairway. Special mention goes to the signature 18th. Assuming there is nobody behind you, you'll want to spend some time on the tee trying to carry the 230 yards or so to the upper tier of the split level fairway. Success brings you a short and simple approach and a chance at a highly prized birdie.
There are so many delightful challenges here that this review could quickly turn into a dissertation. Safe to say that this is an excellent course packed full of thoughtful challenges, not least the bunkers which are present in huge numbers. The rough too is thick enough to penalise you a stroke nearly every time you find it. Even if you can negotiate all this safely and get on the green in regulation, at Templer Park the phrase 'in regulation' necessarily comes with inverted commas. The greens here are massive, and you can find yourself with 30 yard putts. On such lightning quick greens packed full of deceptive breaks, you'll need impressive skill or excellent luck to get down in two.
So although you're scorecard is unlikely to end up as beautiful as the course itself, it's hard not to have a lot of fun trying to tame this beast. This is one of the few courses where you can shoot three figures and still look back on the round fondly. A round at Templer Park Country Club is a must on any Malaysian Golf Holiday.
