Staffield Country Resort

One of the best courses in the country plays a little too long for weekend hackers but is an enjoyable challenge for the more accomplished.

On the old trunk road to Seremban you'll find the 27 international standard holes set amidst the 335 acres of Staffield Country Resort. Winner of a host of awards for maintenance and landscaping as well as being named '3rd Best Golf Course in Malaysia' in 2003/4, this is a course that more or less lives up to the hype if you can find it (the map on their website is somewhat misleading, so we suggest you equip yourself with GPS).

The rolling meadows prove a pleasant environment in which to play this tough course, with rough that punishes all who find it. Indeed, this long course is not one for the wayward, as veering off-line and finding the deep stuff, or indeed one of the many well maintained bunkers, will leave your hopes of reaching the green in regulation in tatters. The fairways are reasonably generous however, and although there was the odd patch of cow grass amidst the lush bermuda, they were in the main in excellent condition. The greens were very fast indeed, and a feathery touch is required to avoid the dreaded 3-putt.

The par-3 8th is the hole that everyone talks about, as it requires a spectacular carry over 175 yards of water to a smallish green. The number of balls swallowed up by the water must be astronomical, and no doubt forms a cottage industry for those intrepid enough to go diving for them. The epic par-5 10th is a challenging double dog-leg that starts from an elevated tee, ruined only slightly by the odd ball from the nearby driving range trickling onto the fairway. It's pretty tough to get on in regulation, and as with much of the rest of the course you are always struggling to get down in two so some pretty accurate play is required to stand a chance of scoring well. While is may play a little too long to allow weekend hackers much fun, if your handicap is below 18 you should relish the enjoyable and attractive challenge offered by Staffield Country Resort.
