Host of a raft of prestigious events including the Asian Tour Volvo Masters, the World Cup of Golf and the co-sanctioned European Tour Malaysian Open, and holder of a number of accolades from the golfing press, the Kota Permai Golf and Country Club is a cut above.
From arriving at the newly expended clubhouse and warming up on the two tier driving range to negotiating the Bermuda grass of the 18th green, it's easy to see why Golf Malaysia magazine awarded made it their Number One Golf Course five years out of six, an accolade further verified by a readers' poll in 2007/8.
Playing golf Kota Permai Golf and Country Club
As you'd expect from a course that regularly plays host to some of the top golfers in the world, it's pretty challenging negotiating 7,000-odd yards of rolling fairways, sculpted bunkers and scenic water hazards. If you can successfully find the fairways, Japanese Zoysia grass ensures a great lie and excellent course upkeep keeps them in pristine condition. You won't find yourself hitting the perfect drive and then end up on a bare patch or in waterlogged grass.
The signature par-4 2nd hole has regularly been voted Most Beautiful Hole in Malaysia and it's not hard to see why. Water stretches along the left hand side of the hole before cutting into the fairway just in front of the green meaning your second shot, presuming you can avoid the beautifully sculpted fairway bunkers that you can't really see from the tee, needs to be stunningly accurate. An added attraction is the large rendition of the club's logo, a squirrel, on the left as you reach the green.
The challenges don't ease towards the end of the round - your tee shot on 17 will need to bisect OB and bunkers on the right and water on the left to reach the narrow fairway, while the epic 564 yard par-5 18th is as much about bunkers as length. The panoramic view from the elevated tee of the clubhouse and much of the course will live long in the memory even if you bogey you get won't.
With newly upgraded tee boxes and rebuilt greens, all to USGA specifications, this is a course on which to test yourself against the best, or at least get a flavour of the rarified circumstances the world's best get to play in on a weekly basis. If the course at Kota Permai Golf & Country Club whets the appetite, check in at the excellent golf academy which boasts top notch practice facilities. Maybe one day you'll get good enough for someone to pay you to play here.
