Bukit Unggul Country Club

Bukit Unggul Country Club could be a great course. It's well designed and a tough challenge but it's let down by poor maintenance.

Despite having the word Bukit (meaning hills) in its name, Bukit Unggul Country Club is actually set in a valley an hour south of Kuala Lumpur near Dengkil. The Club's website describes it in glowing terms, but sad to say it doesn't live up to the hype in our experience.

How to play Bukit Unggul Country Club?

It certainly looks the part, the lush jungle that borders the hole providing a pretty frame for this undulating course that is home to a wide variety of local wildlife. However, the fairways somewhat detract from the effect, suffering from an evident lack of maintenance - we experienced bare patches, mud and dead grass that was unbecoming of such a course. Likewise the bunkers, which featured sand that was too packed down to allow for any subtlety with a sand wedge, and were littered with stones.

The greens are in much better shape, the undulating surface running true. Reaching them though is difficult, as they are generally either elevated or sunken, making judging distances tricky and meaning that the course plays much harder than its rather short 6782 yards would suggest. While the fairways are fairly generous, there are a lot of dog-legs and the dense jungle means there is no escape if you make a mistake. If you're Tiger Woods you should probably have a go at cutting a few corners, but the rest of us are well advised to play conservatively.

The best thing about the course at Bukit Unggul Country Club is the price, which is very reasonable, and is perhaps the explanation of the lack of maintenance. The design is great, and there is a great course in there somewhere but you can't help but feel that raising the price and spending the proceeds on upkeep would be a much better deal for everyone. If you go with realistic expectations then there is much to enjoy on this challenging course, and hopefully things will improve in the future.
