Tee Times Laos Golf Courses

Tee Times Laos

With stiff competition for the tourist dollar from the more well-beaten paths of its neighbours, Laos is an often overlooked destination. Naturally the government's stance of tourism was a major contributing factor, but with tourism now being actively promoted there will soon come a time when tourists outnumber monks in this spellbinding and unspoilt country. Further, the opening a number of top quality golf courses means a Laos golf holiday is proving an increasingly popular option.

A very laid back country with a traditional approach to like, you won't be finding the McDonald's restaurants and luxury shopping centres that blight the increasingly homogenous asian metropolises. Even capital Vientiane seems more like a village than a city at times, such is the chilled out nature of life on the banks of the Mekong river, while the temples and tranquility of the city of Luang Prabang, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with an 11:30pm curfew and a ban on buses and lorries, are the perfect antidote to modern life.

The stunning Laos wilderness, the most unspoilt in Southeast Asia, offers numerous opportunities for those looking for nature or adventure. Kayaking, biking and rock climbing are all available, and trekking offers the chance to take in the spectacular scenery and meet the locals, who will likely invite you to take part in a traditional Lao barbecue.

Laos is swiftly playing catch-up when it comes to golf, but both the capital and Luang Prabang offer great opportunities for a golf holiday. Vientiane has three courses within range of the city. The newly renovated Lao Country Club boasts the fastest greens in the country and is probably the best in the region, although the newly opened SEA Games Golf Course is starting to give it a run for it's money. Further out, Dansavanh Golf & Country Club is a hilly, picturesque course with water in play on no fewer than ten holes, where you can combine risk/reward golf with a trip to the onsite casino.

The jewel in Laos' golfing crown, however, is the Luang Prabang Golf Club, which recently hosted the country's first PGA Tour Event. Few courses in the world can rival the spectacular setting in which this world class course is set, and anyone embarking on a Laos golf holiday should certainly include a round or two here on their itinerary.

Laos has a monsoon-dominated climate so the prime time to visit is during the dry season November to May. Southern Laos is best avoided from March to May when temperatures can exceed 40°C. There are three international airports, with various discounted flights available from Europe.
