Known mainly as an industrial hub serving both Singapore and Johor Baru, this small Sumatran island has in recent years made several bids to diversify into tourism. While it used to be known for its casinos and go-go bars, these dubious delights are now much harder to find and it is golf that is proving the most popular draw with seven courses having sprung up to cater for expats and Singaporean golfers looking for cheap rounds.
This isn't to say that there aren't other things to see or do - the Grand Mosque and the Buddhist Temple of Maha Vilhara are both well worth a look, and the Padepokan Seni art centre in Sekupang has all manner or Indonesian arts and crafts on display, as well as performances put on for tourists. Over in Waterfront City you can engage in any number of watersports, try go-carting or simply relax on the excellent beaches near some of the excellent family resorts, and despite the governor's crackdown on the go-go bars, there remains a vibrant nightlife for those looking to party into the early hours.
Being just 20km from Singapore, Batam's golf courses are easily accessible for those preferring to stay in its neighbour's rather more refined environment but unwilling to pay the astronomical green fees there. Taking a short ferry trip from downtown Singapore offers you a wealth of top class golfing options at a decent price. The recent influx of golfers has seen existing courses upgraded and some of the world's top designers coming to town. Thus, the once neglected Batam Hills Golf Resort has been overhauled and now boasts the fastest greens on the island, and the once dull course at Southlinks Golf & Country Club has a newfound reputation as being one of the top courses in the region thanks to new hazards and re-sculpted fairways.
The Greg Norman-designed Tering Bay Golf & Country Club may play quite short, but don't get overconfident as there's plenty of water and sand waiting to catch you out, and while the first of the nine holes at Tamarin Santan Golf Club is straightforward, the landing zones seem to shrink and the water to expand as you progress at this inspired Jack Nicklaus creation. The 27 varied holes at the Palm Springs Golf & Beach Resort are hugely popular, and at Padang Golf Sukajadi there are birdies on offer but also the chance to go very badly wrong in pursuit of them. Possibly the best of the lot, the stunning scenery and international reputation of the Indah Puri Golf Resort make it a must-play on your Batam golf holiday, and its signature hole will live long in the memory.
