Golf holidays in Malaysia
There are two sides to Malaysia, with the main peninsula that borders Thailand and Singapore split from the wild jungles of Borneo by the South China Sea, and each offers different, but satisfyingly enjoyable experiences. Despite the absence of the grand ancient ruins that prove such a draw in Thailand, this is a country with a rich cultural heritage born out of the heady mix of Malay, Chinese, Indian and Indigenous influences that is readily apparent to visitors, not least in the wonderful cuisine on offer.
There are great contrasts between the gleaming metropolis of capital city Kuala Lumpur, whose space-age skyscrapers rose on the back of investment in high technology and oil, and the traditional architecture and crafts still on display in rural areas. You can live in the lap of luxury on the capital, relax on the beaches of Langkawi, or trek into the wild jungles of Borneo.
The Malaysian tourist board claims that the country is 'truly Asia', and to be fair this is no idle boast. Kuala Lumpur is every inch the modern asian megalopolis, and a much cheaper place to stay than neighbouring Singapore, with the added bonus of boasting dozens of golf courses within easy reach of the city centre, catering for all price ranges.
To the south, you'll find historic port city of Melaka whose multicultural heritage and cultural attractions make it a popular tourist spot, and while the absence of tourist attractions in bordering state of Johor means it suffer in comparison to other areas of this fascinating country, a plethora of quality golf courses more than compensates.
Off the northwestern coast of the Malaysia peninsula lies the island of Penang, with its rich multicultural history, pristine beaches and deserved reputation as the 'food paradise' of Malaysia (which, in the context of the excellent cuisine available in this country, is something of an accolade). Throw in some excellent hotel resorts and a smattering of the best golf courses in Malaysia and you have a recipe for a perfect golf holiday.
Equally, the archipelago of Langkawi is not Malaysia's best known tourist destination for nothing. From the palm-fringed sandy beaches to an interior of jungle-clad hills and patchworks of paddy-fields, it would be a great place to go even without the golf courses that have now sprung up, not least the Golf Club Dalit Bay which is quite simply one of the exciting rounds of golf on offer anywhere on earth.
Across the South China Sea you'll find the two Bornean territories of Sabah and Sarawak, a heady mix of granite peaks, remote tribes and wild jungles populated by orang-utans. While you can find plenty of creature comforts in the excellent hotel resorts, which offer a good base from which to explore the opportunities such as treks up the mighty Mt. Kinabalu and the diving on offer around the Sipadan reef, you should also consider staying in one of the longhouse villages in Sarawak and taking a longboat through the murky waters - despite the gradual advance of capitalism, there remain enough areas of untouched jungle that it's possible to imagine you are a 19th century explorer.
Further, a number of quality golf courses, such as Borneo Country Club and the Arnold Palmer-designed Damai Golf & Country Club, will keep you focussed on driving straight to avoid the inevitable dropped shots that ensue when it's your ball that does the exploring.
Accessible and affordable, Malaysia is a stunning and varied tourist destination that offers culture and cuisine, adventure and relaxation. Throw in over 200 golf courses, including some designed by the likes of Nicklaus, Palmer, Player and Norman, and it is easy to see why it is one of the most popular choices for a golf holiday, particularly between March and October when you can avoid the worst of the rains and humidity whilst still enjoying temperatures around 30ºC.
