San Lorenzo Golf
The San Lorenzo Golf Club is a beautiful golf course as well as a natural reserve, and is amongst Portugals renowned courses. The San Lorenzo Golf Club is located within the vast Quinto do Lago Estate of Almancil in Algrave, Portugal. The 18 hole course is perfectly crafted amidst the pine wood forests and lakes of the beautiful Ria Formosa nature reserve, as well as offers panoramic views of the vast blue expanse of the Atlantic Ocean. The San Lorenzo Golf Club was designed in 1988 by American golf architect, Joseph Lee and his partner, W. Roquemore; it is currently owned by the Le Meridien Dona Filipa Hotel. The 6,238 metres, par 72, golf course of the San Lorenzo Golf Club layout consists of 18 beautifully created scenic holes that wind their way through the natural settings of lakes, pine woods and beaches on the Algrave coastline. The well conditioned course displays vast slick greens, elevated tees, undulating pine tree-lined fairways, sand traps and bunkers and innumerable water hazards through its lakes. Overall, the San Lorenzo course, besides offering a placid location and visual delight with its natural beauty, it also presents three different tees to add variety, thus also forming a tough challenge to golfers.
Pinheiros Altos Golf Course
The newest course within the Quinta do Lago estate, and situated only five minutes from the hotel, is an independent, 6,159 metres, par 72, 27 hole course designed by Ronald Fream and Jorge Santana. The course has an unusual layout with three nines of contrasting character -- 'The Pines', 'The Corks' and 'The Olives'. The Pines, as its name suggests, meanders through typical Algarvian pine woods whereas many water hazards must be negotiated coming home. The rest is much flatter but the holes work their way through a series of lakes requiring accurate driving and precise iron play. The greens have a reputation for being the most difficult to read and to hit because they are small and undulating and usually in very good condition. The course embraces part of the Ria Formosa Natural Park, making this another course of beauty and challenge for players of all standards. The outstanding par 3 5th (Pines) calls for a mid-iron shot played across a valley full of umbrella pines to a heavily contoured green. Pinheiros Altos is an unusual course in that 18-holes are laid out in higher, undulating terrain partially with pine-woods as well as a few artificial lakes, whereas the remaining nine are in an equally attractive lower-lying area with wetlands, containing more water hazards.
