President Country Club

A variety of challenges on this varied course. Elsewhere on the web you will read about how every hole is designed to be unique, and while this is something of an overstatement the President Country Club does indeed offer a wide range of challenges to keep golfers of all levels interested. The North/East course is the harder of the two, full of tricky dog-legs and small greens protected by water and substantial amounts of sand; your approach play needs to be strong to avoid the dreaded bogeys. Both courses have deceptively wide fairways - even when you land on them you can find yourself with a tough second shot to the green so position is important. If you are particularly wayward you can find yourself in some tricky Bermuda rough that will often force you to lay up. The undulating fairways of the West course present an enjoyable challenge, involving avoiding marshland and small lakes and culminating in an excellent par-5. Whilst green fees at President Country Club are reasonable, the condition of the course is not what it once was - the tee boxes are often worn out and full of sandy divots and some of the fairways have seen better days, and while the clubhouse has a pleasant Mediterranean feel to it, the restaurant isn't really up to scratch. However, you're not really there for the food anyway, so just enjoy what should be an excellent day's golf. Like the sound of this course? Lam Lukka Country Club

Get away from the crowds and the city at this great value course, with challenges to suit the pro and the weekend hacker alike. Far from the hecticness of Bangkok, Lam Luk Ka Country Club is an oasis of rural charm with 36 holes that wind their way through Bangkok's wetlands, whose numerous trees and waterways are home to a plethora of wildlife. The upside of its distance from the city is the relative ease of getting a tee time on at least one of the two quality courses, the Championship East Course (comprising the A & B nines) and the Resort West Course (C & D nines). Both are beautifully presented and maintained, and characterised by ever-present water hazards and probably the best putting surfaces in the region. The Championship East course, which hosted the 2002 Thailand PGA Championship, is the longer of the two, with straight drives necessary to avoid the hazards that will quickly punish errant shots. The long 7th and 8th are two of the best par-4s in Bangkok, and the course concludes with a dramatic par-5 which is reachable in two; boldness is either greatly rewarded by an eagle opportunity or harshly punished by the monstrous and greedy deep bunker in front of the green. The West course is shorter and a little less challenging, thereby suitable for a wider range of skill levels, but those looking to take advantage of that and shoot a low score would be well advised not to be complacent as there is water in play on 15 holes; we particularly enjoyed the fact that there are different ways to play many of the holes, so while a long drive is useful it is not necessary. Again it is the 18th that will stick in the memory, with a fairway bisected by a creek and an awkward sloping green. What the caddies occasionally lack in English skills they make up for with course knowledge, always seeming to know their distances even from the undergrowth in which we sometimes found ourselves. The clubhouse offers everything from an Olympic size pool to quality Thai food in the restaurant that offers a great view of the course. With reasonable green fees, Lam Luk Ka Country Club definitely falls into the 'must play' category. Like the sound of this course? Laem Chabang International Country Club

Jack Nicklaus has designed the connoisseurs choice. Boasting the best layout in Pattaya and rated amongst the top golfing experiences in Thailand Laem Chabang International Country Club is the choice of the connoisseur. The 27 Jack Nicklaus-designed holes, (split into the Lake, Mountain and Valley nines after the terrain in which each is set) offer a variety of challenges that make best use of the natural lie of the land. Picking a favourite just seems wrong given that we loved all three, although our scorecard suffered the most on the Valley nine, so if you want to protect your handicap you're better off avoiding its undulations and intimidating water features in favour of the other two nines. It would be wrong however to downplay the challenges on Lake and Mountain; the thankfully large green of the downhill par-4 6th is tough to reach in regulation as it requires a near-200 yard carry over a lake; but that's your best case scenario, as if you aren't straight off the tee you will become intimately acquainted with sand or unkept rough to the right or thick woods to the left. The Mountain nine opens with a tee shot through a narrow wooded trench and features one of the most enjoyable par-3s in Thailand, a water protected green lying well below your position on the second tee offering up a picturesque challenge. The course is kept in immaculate condition all year round and makes the most of the blooming splendour of the region to provide a stunningly beautiful setting in which to play golf. Recently relaid fairways and tee boxes have worked wonders. With clubhouse facilities and onsite accommodation on a par with the best in Asia this course comes highly recommended. Thanks, Jack. Siam Country Club Plantation Course

Brilliantly designed to test the world's best, this is a world class course not to be missed. Featuring three sets of nine holes each named after the fruit plantations they took the place of and designed with the hosting of major international tournaments in mind, the Plantation Course at Siam Country Club provides a truly first rate golfing experience. Set in rolling hills that allow great views of the Gulf Of Thailand and dotted with mature trees and deep ravines, this is a course that plays as difficult as any in the country, and not just because of its length. While the 1st, a 370 yard dog-leg left with bunkers protecting the shortest route to the green, isn't too tricky, you quickly come to realise that the Plantation Course at Siam Country Club was set up to test the world's best. With its long carries over water, blind approaches, awkwardly elevated greens and fairways where a flat lie is something to cherish, it's easy to end up with an ugly scorecard. Uniquely, the course features Asia's first triple green, a 2,000 square foot behemoth which is the target for the the 7th on the Tapioca nine and the 4th and 9th on the Pineapple nine. Divided into three distinct sections by its depressions, it's a great (and unusual) centrepiece for what is a truly world class golf course. The golf course is in pristine condition, manicured fairways bordered by challenging rough then thick gorse, and greens that are super quick, with none of the wear and tear often found on public courses. With some awkward pin positions and some awkward slopes, having a good caddy is essential, but fortunately all that we have experienced have been excellent. The practice facilities also are fit for a king, comprising driving range, practice bunkers and putting greens that match those found on the course itself, and the locker rooms in the excellent modern clubhouse are pristine. The only feasible complaint is that the course seems to be particularly popular with flies and insects drawn to the nearby plantations, so take some insect repellent with you. That aside, there are really only good things to say about what many say is the ultimate golfing experience in the region. Like the sound of this course?
