This excellent course really should be better known. Now you know, take advantage before the crowds descend. Despite being host of several PGA events and the only Arthur Hills creation in Thailand, the championship course at Vintage Golf Club is less well known than the more illustrious Bangkok courses, which proves surprisingly once you have played this excellent course. The sign at the entrance that proclaims this to be a 'world class golf course' is bold but not entirely unwarranted. This is a classic layout traversing gently rolling terrain and retaining the natural features of the Thai countryside, with plenty to challenge golfers of all ages and abilities, not least the four par-3s. Water is much in evidence - on the standout 5th, it runs all the way along the right of the hole. Playing too far left to avoid it only increases the challenge of reaching the green which also has water behind it. The stretch from 12 through 15 also features a lot of water, placing a premium on accuracy off the tee. One nice touch that slightly alleviates the challenge is the fact that the day's pin placements are helpfully detailed on the scorecard. Knowledgeable caddies and the availability of excellent practice facilities also help. The Tudor-style clubhouse has undergone a much needed upgrade, so its in excellent condition and everything you need is here, from airy locker rooms and a massage service to a clubhouse restaurant that specialises in Japanese food. Being something of a well-kept secret, getting a tee time at Vintage Golf Club is no problem, and the course is practically empty on weekdays which makes it an attractive proposition. Make sure you save a couple of your best shots for the 18th, a 385 yard par 4 that features a very tricky second shot into a long, narrow green that is bordered by water.
