This revamped classic is golfing nirvana, even if your scorecard might take a beating on the final holes. The oldest privately owned golf course in Thailand and host of the 2010 Honda LPGA Classic, the Old Course at Siam Country Club remains the pick of the local golf courses, especially since its recent overhaul, which has restored the old lady of Pattaya to its former glory whilst adding a few new twists. Thanks to its age the course is blessed with mature trees, many of them bearing fruit and together with the abundant flora giving the sense of playing golf in an orchard. Of course, you'll often find yourself stuck behind one of these large trees, adding to the challenge presented by the abundant lakes and creeks. You'll find some of the bunkers to be very deep so its worth taking extra care to avoid them. All of these factors come into play on the standout 15th, a par-4 with water crossing the fairway and a massive tree that can easily obstruct an off-target tee shot. Taking a driver off the tee will put you in the water, but too short and the carry to the well-protected green (which, like all of them here, runs very fast) will be very long. Indeed, the 15th simply marks the start of what are arguably the best (or toughest) four finishing holes in Pattaya, so you'd better hope that the large golden Buddha that overlooks the 9th green is on side! Excellent practice facilities and a modern clubhouse provide everything you would expect and the staff are very helpful, especially the caddies who have often been working the course for decades and consequently have an excellent knowledge of the subtle breaks on the greens. One minor gripe is the compulsory cart rule, but that aside this is as close to golfing perfection as you are likely to find. Like the sound of this course? Secure a tee time and take advantage of the discounted green fees on offer by adding Siam Country Club The Old Course to your Pattaya golf holiday package.
