The first golf course built in the area in 1993, the Santiburi Chiang Rai Country Club is widely regarded as one of the best designs in Asia and remains a favourite of Thais and expats alike. Set in the valleys and hills a short distance from downtown Chiang Rai, the lush fairways of this championship course wind around the huge mature trees and crystal clear lakes that give the course an almost majestic feel.
Despite being designed to challenge the pros, we amateurs needn't be too intimidated, particularly with four sets of tees to choose from. Also, with the course set up as a risk / reward affair, there is always a more conservative route to take to the lightning quick greens.
Whichever route you take, you will encounter endless sand and grass bunkers as well as plenty of water. Flat lies are at a premium on the undulating fairways, making avoiding the water that runs alongside holes 2, 3 and 4 harder than it would be otherwise. The standout hole is probably the last one, a long par-5 where your tee shot must avoid water to the left and your second must avoid another lake as well as some tricky fairway bunkers.
Excellent maintenance thanks to the continued investment of the Singha Beer family who own the course keeps the fairways lush and the greens running true all year round, and these standards are also met in the clubhouse which is a first class affair where you can further line the pockets of the owners by purchasing their beer in the bar after your round.
