In high season you'll have plenty of time to appreciate why this excellent course is so popular while you wait to hit your shots.
Sitting on the side of a hill near the Gulf of Thailand lies Rayong Green Valley Country Club, part of the huge complex that also includes the St. Andrew's 2000 course. It's not for nothing that this is one of the most popular courses in the country, the great views and mature environment providing a picturesque backdrop to a satisfying challenge.
The course makes the most of the natural lie of the land, forcing you to navigate between boulders or over rocky outcrops whilst fighting the slopes, but there are also plenty of man-made hazards to keep you on your toes. The fairway bunkers are particularly well-positioned, inviting the low handicappers to clear them while leaving room for the lesser golfer to lay up. While the course does ease up somewhat after the standout 1st, probably the toughest opening hole in Thailand thanks to the forced carry over water from the tee followed by a long, uphill second to a small green, it still presents enough of a challenge that playing to your hard won handicap is tricky, particularly if you allow the idyllic setting to distract you from your shotmaking.
The slight wear and tear on the tee boxes and greens are testament to the popularity of Rayong Green Valley Country Club, particularly amongst the ever increasing Taiwanese and Japanese tourists, but given the amount of footfall the course is in remarkable shape. However, if you are after a quick round then it's best to come in off-season unless you are happy to wait to hit every shot. If you can make it round with enough time to spare, check out one of the three restaurants in the well appointed clubhouse, or take up the unusual option of a game of polo at the equestrian centre.
