a promising course desperately in need of some TLC before it can be wholeheartedly recommended.
After the success of the nearby Gassan Khuntan course, owner/designer Pravit Reang-Po set out to build a second course and the Gassan Lake City Golf Club is the result of his labours.
Despite using many of the same design features of its sister course, this is a more forgiving layout with an emphasis on being accessible to golfers of all abilities. To this end, players often have a choice of route to the green, allowing beginners to play it safe while the more accomplished golfer takes on the risk/reward route. However, don't assume you can post a decent if unspectacular score by avoiding the risky strategy. While plenty of greens are easily reachable in regulation, there is enough water dotted around the course to catch you out whichever route to the green you choose, and the odd island green means target golf is the order of the day.
At the standout 460 yard par-4 9th, avoiding dropped shots is an accomplishment in itself. From the tee you must hit far enough to carry the corner of a lake but not so far that you end up in the second water hazard. Even if you can end up in position A you will still face a long approach to an elevated green that is well protected by numerous bunkers. One of the toughest par-4s in Chiang Mai, but an enjoyable challenge.
Sadly, the course conditions haven't always lived up to the quality of the design, with a few worn fairways and some indifferent bunker maintenance adding a frustrating extra challenge. On the plus side, the clubhouse is huge and features spacious locker rooms, a large pro shop and an excellent air-conditioned restaurant all staffed by friendly and helpful staff, but all that can't entirely make up for the lackluster state of the course at Gassan Lake City Golf Club. With some proper care and attention, this course could really shine but until then, there are probably better options for a round of golf in Chiang Mai.
