No pretentions on this well-designed course where the low green fees mean you can put up with the minor niggles.
Hidden away in the jungle near Rayong lies the Nick Faldo & Desmond Muirhead-designed Emerald Golf Club, where you an enjoy an unpretentious round of golf whilst tackling some of the best-designed holes in the region.
Without the abundant water hazards that characterise the majority of the courses in Thailand, it relies upon narrow fairways and well-located bunkers to test your golfing abilities. Mr. Faldo was never the longest of drivers so it makes sense that this is a course that places a premium on accuracy rather than distance, although you will still need to give your driver an airing at the standout 5th where you must cross a ravine off the tee and avoid leaving yourself too much to do to reach a green hewn out of the severe slope that provides the backdrop to the hole.
The course isn't in the pristine condition we have come to expect from Thailand golf courses. We found the fairways tainted by weeds and occasionally soggy thanks to poor drainage, and the greens were not as fast as we would have liked. The low green fees are no doubt the root cause of this, so you have to take the rough with the smooth so to speak. The small clubhouse is basic but bolstered by a pleasant open-air restaurant serving decent local fare and helpful, welcoming staff. This is no 5-star experience, but then again it makes no attempt to be, and with your expectations thus adjusted we suggest you take advantage of the low cost and enjoy a pleasant round on this well-designed course.
